Abruzzo is a region with a lovely dominating natural landscape and a paradise for wildlife. One third of the region is designated as national or regional parks and it is therefore a greta place for relaxation as well as visiting the well preserved mediaeval towns and cities. Some of the parks include the Parco Nazionale d'Abruzzo, Lazio e Molise, the Parco Natzionale del Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga, and the Parco Nazionale della Majella.
Pescara:
This is the largest town and the most lively with a population of 150,000. It is a major hub for motorway connections as well as ferries across the Adriatic and you can also fly into the local airport. There are many bars, restaurants and gelateria but the town has largely been rebuilt following the destruction of the last war.
Vasto and Vasto Marina
The very old town of Vasto has a history rich with towers, churches, walls, castles, mansions and museums. In areas the history is virtually untouched and the buildings date back to the Illyrian migration as well as many influences from Roman and Mediaeval times. The town of Vasto is perched on a hill with a castle overlooking the turquoise sea and the sandy beaches of the coast with the town of Vasto Marina lying below.
Vasto Marina lies in the middle of the Vasto coastline, between Punta Penna and the San Salvo Marina beach, which is the largest and most diverse in the region. In contrast to the wonderful sandy beaches south of Vasto, to the north of Vasto the coastline breaks into wonderful rocky inlets.
