The peninsula is owned by a prince and offers a blooming coastal paradise for walkers, with rare plant species; cars are only allowed to the accommodation and the few houses that exist here, otherwise only walking is allowed. Even in high summer one can find secluded rocky or stoney bathing beaches, partly shaded with pines. Nearby the local highly respected white Kratos wine is produced. it is only produced in this one area of Punta Licosa and is sold in very few places.
At the tip of the peninsula is the tiny island of Licosa with its small lighthouse. Even today, the bizarre forms of the rocks and the tiny islets off this part of the coast testify to the earthquake which, thousands of years ago, saw part of the mainland including the ancient Greek settlement of Leucosia sink into the sea. In the shallows, the patterns of its streets can still be clearly seen under the surface of the water ? a spectacle of surreal charm, which seems to blur the boundary between the past and present.
According to legend, this is the famous location of the Siren Leucosia who fell in eternal love with Odysseus, was spurned by him and then she hurled herself into the sea in despair, where she was changed into a giant rock, now the island of Licosa. This gave rise to the legend of the Sirens calling sailors onto the rocks and resulting in shipwrecks.
The views from this rocky and rugged coastline are fabulous and it gives bvisitors a real sense of being remote and isolated, among nature. For self catering holiday accommodation in the region of Cilento you can rent Cilento apartments, Cilento villas or country cottages to suit all your needs.
