Cilento is part of the province of Salerno and lies to the south of the Amalfi Coast. It is most well known for its national parks and unspoilt countryside and coast which is little known outside of Italy. In fact there are two National Parks; Vesuvius and Cilento as well as nine Regional Parks, and protected marine areas along the coast as well as archaeological parks. In total these protected areas and nature reserves cover thirty percent of the Campania region. The highest mountain peak in Campania is Cervati which stands 1,898 metres high in the province of Salerno and has a unique morphological system. It is situated in the National Park, Cilento e Vallo di Diano, which covers a total of over 178 thousand hectares. Many people classify Cilento as unrivalled in beauty with hills, green countryside and a lovely protected coastline. This makes Cilento an ideal place for your Italian holiday and renting cilento apartments or villas in the fishing towns, countryside or by one of the lovely Cilento sandy beaches. There is also rocky coastline with clear waters and beautiful sealife for snorkeling and scuba diving. Cilento is also a paradise for hikers and walkers alike. A huge variety of paths and routes are available and there are many possible trips to be made through the beautiful landscape in the province of Benevento. Specifically there is, for the summer, the Massiccio del Taburno-Camposauro, known as the 'sleeping lady of Sannio' because it looks like the outline of an outstretched woman; this amazes visitors with its incredible blooms of violets and orchids. There is also the Matese section of the "Italian Way", 6,000 kilometres long in 350 stages, being the longest hiking trail in the world. |
