Florence has a population of just under 400,000 (600,000 including the suburbs) and is a huge monument to the beauty produced by the Renaissance. Florence is also the capital city of the Tuscany region. In fact, from 1865 to 1870 it was the capital city of the Kingdom of Italy.
This city is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance and was ruled for many years by various heads of the Medici dynasty who were great sponsors of artists, sculptors and architects who created the buildings and monuments that we revere today. The Renaissance gives us many famous names that have lasted through the centuries: Botticelli, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Alberti, Ghiberti, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca and, of course, Leonardo da Vinci.
UNESCO estimates that almost 10% of the world's art treasure worthy of preservation is located in Florence and this is why many visitors flock to 'Firenze' to see these many and varied art treasures.
