Casal Velino Marina Apartments & Villas (Ischia)

The marina of Casalvelino lies at the foot of Monte Stella (1150m), on the Gulf of Velia, part of the Tyrrhenian Sea. On a green hill above the town stands an ancient Saracen watchtower, commanding views along the coastline of long sandy beaches, from the excavations of ancient Velia to the hills steeply sloping into the sea around the fishing town of Pioppi.

Looking inland, one can enjoy the panoramic view of Monte Gelbison, rising to a height of 1780m above sea level, surrounded by numerous mountain peaks. For example, Monte Alburni whose two rocky summits, at over 1700m, provide a spectacular contrast to the deep green of Monte Sacro. In the centre of the town is the Piazzetta, the meeting place of every Italian village under shady plants and palms, right next to the harbour, where fishermen mend their nets at the wharf. From here small excursion boats sail to the Cape of Palinuro and the marine national park of Punta Licosa.

In the town and along the coast there are numerous characteristic bistros, which pamper their guests with the specialities of the area, accompanied by excellent local wines. Every September the feast of the Apostle Matthew is celebrated in the marina. According to legend, after his death in Africa, his remains were interred in a small chapel dedicated to him here in the town. This was included by the Vatican in the programme for the holy year 2000. Higher up in the hills, surrounded by lemon and olive groves, lies the town of Casalvelino, a picturesque, medieval town in whose narrow alleyways time seems to stand still.
