Italy has a very long Mediterranean coastline facing both the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic seas. This coastline has both lovely sandy beaches and dramatic rocky areas, the latter good for snorkeling and scuba diving. The islands of Sicily and Sardinia also have some fabulous sandy beaches often sloping into beautiful warm turquoise water.
Although many beaches in Italy, particularly in the north, have regimented lines of sun loungers, deck chairs and umbrellas due to the 'privatising of the beaches', there are still numerous sandy beaches where the public are completely free to roam and enjoy the surroundings.
