Italy has some wonderful sandy beaches as well as rocky coastlines. Some of these sandy beaches stretch for miles whereas others are hidden in secluded coves. Over the years the Italian government has rented more and more beach area to private individuals who rent sun loungers, deck chairs and umbrellas as a business but who are also responsible for keeping their area of the beach clean. The result is that large areas of beach are privately run and lined with rows of sun loungers and umbrellas in a rather regimented fashion. Nevertheless, there most beaches also have public areas free from these regimented rows, and there are also many beaches which are completely public especially more in the south of Italy and on the Islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
