Italian National Parks

Italy has an abundance of National Parks, Regional Parks, Marine Protected Areas and various types of Reserves. We have given a summary of some of the highlights here.

In an area between the Cisa and Forbici Passes, the woodland ridges separating Tuscany from Emilia give way to a mountain environment. The Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre, is one of the Unesco world heritage sites and consequently has environmental and cultural assets which are essential to safeguard. The area has hills steeply falling towards the sea resulting in overhanging coasts, with picturesque bays and small beaches. The terraces worked into the hillsides have literally thousands of kilometers of dry-stone walls enclosing the various agriculture such as vineyards. There are a few old hamlets clutching to the hillsides and some lovely small towns with beautiful backdrops. The area is famous for its extensive walks and attracts hikers from all over the world as well as those just wanting peace and relaxation. The Cilento National Park or Parco Nazionale del Cilento e Vallo di Diano is the second largest park in Italy. It reaches from the Tyrrhenian coast to the foot of the Apennines in Campania and Basilicata, and it encompasses the Alburni Mountains, of the Cervati as well as Mount Bulgheria and Mount Stella.

This is a fascinating natural area which has a mythical past rich in history and culture: from the call of nymph Leucosia to the beaches where Palinuro left Aeneas, and from the historic Greek ruins of Elea and Paestum to the fabulous Certosa of Padula.

Flying into Naples you can see Mount Vesuvius and the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio, which is of great geological and historical interest and is being used to promote environmental education and scientific research activities. The Park was also set up to protect this most famous volcano in the world. Moutn Vesuvius is a typical example of a volcano consisting of an external truncated cone, the extinct Mount Somma, forming a crater perimeter which has been mainly destroyed, and in which there is a smaller cone represented by Vesuvius, which is still active.
