Menaggio Area Information

Menaggio is a lovely tourist holiday location located about halfway up the west side of Lake Como in Lombardia, Italy. It is one of the main towns on Lake Como and the Golden Triangle, with rail links from Varenna as well as main car and passenger ferry links around Lago di Como. It is also a great location to rent a Lake Como Villa for your holidays or to stay in a Lake Como Apartment and potter around the town.

Menaggio is an attractive and busy town in the summer months and is accessible by car from Como at the south end of the lake, or Lugano in Switzerland, across the pass via Porlezza (340) above Menaggio but also by ferry from Bellagio and Varenna (where there is a train from Milan).

The centre of the old town is really around Piazza Garibaldi which is close to Menaggio's harbour and features mostly nineteenth century buildings in an Italian alpine style. The higher part of the town has a more medieval appearance with narrow alleys, steep staircases and stone buildings. This blend of old and new with the range of shops, restaurants, cafes, public squares and alleyways, as well as the lovely tree lined shores of the lake make it a relaxing and picturesque spot by Lake Como.

Menaggio has some lovely small churches including San Stefano (17th century), San Giusto and San Carlo with its beautiful bell tower. There is also the the ruins of a medieval castle above the town. However it is the ell known and prominent villas that are trully worth visiting. Perhaps the most well known is Villa Carlotta situated in the nearby town of Tremezzo, a short drive or ferry ride away. The villa and the gardens date from the fist half of the eighteenth century and were built for the Marchese Clerici as a summer home away from Milan. The 18th century gardens were laid out in the former classical italian style. The villa is neoclassical in style and stands above three terraces linked to the lake by a series of double stairways with imposing balustrades.
