The ancient Como was conquered by the Romans lead by Marco Claudio Marcello in 196 BC. Later the the town of Como obtained the Roman Statute from Julius Caesar. Evidence of the Romans is still seen today in the form of eight cipolin marble columns of the 'Liceo Volta' arcades by some stretches of the town walls, and by the remains of Porta Pretoria located in the vaults of the 'Scuola Media Parini'.
