Le Marche People and Culture
The population of Umbria is 840 thousand which may appear small due to the agricultural nature of this region and generally smaller mediaeval towns. A total of 82,000 of the people living in Le Marche are from other countries. The main towns are Ancona with 102,000 people, Pesaro with 92,000, Fano with 63,000 and Ascoli-Piceno with 52,000.
The region is named after the Umbri tribe, who settled in the region in the 6th century BC. Their language was Umbrian, which is related to Latin. The modern region of Umbria, however, is essentially a different region of Italy than that bearing the same name in Roman times, since the former extended through most of what is now northern Le Marche, to Ravenna, but excluded the west bank of the Tiber.
In modern times the Le Marche's industry developed around the crafts of shoes, paper, furniture, and shipbuilding. The port of Ancona is the only sizeable harbour, the other small harbours used to be frequented by fishing fleets.
There is a lot of history in this region with many old towns, castles, churches and historic Palazzi. Life still revolves around lovely Mediaeval towns like Ascoli-Piceno, Macerata and Urbino which are all worth visiting.
