Le Marche (sometimes known in English as the Marches) runs from the Adriatic beaches of the eastern Italian Coast to the mountainous Appenines of central Italy. A beautiful route for your summer holidays starts from Ancona, you could head north-west to appreciate the Renaissance riches of Urbino, or south-west towards the green hills of Umbria. In general Le Marche is a lovely mixture of mediaeval towns, rurual countryside and long sandy beaches facing the glistening Adriatic Sea. In the 4th Century BC exiles from Magna Gracea colonised much of this region with the most notable influence being in Ancona, the most northerly point of Greek penetration. St the time of the early Middle Ages Le Marche marked the edge of the Holy Roma Empire; 'marche' actually means border area. The peak for Le Marche was under Federico da Montefeltro in the 15th Century when Urbino became one of Europe's leading courts.

Today one of the greatest attractions for visitors including Italians themselves, is for the coatsal stretches with sandy beaches and seaside towns. However, we would advise visitors to Le Marche Italy to explore the hilly rural interior and old towms as well as enjoy the sunbathing and swimming at the coast.

The regional cuisine includes the famous Truffles, and robust cheeses as well as tender hams and salamis. Olives stuffed with meat and herbs and fish soup are also recipes and foods worth trying. This can all be washed down with the dry white Verdicchio wine.
