Le Marche Wine

Le Marche is a rural region sloping from the mountains in the west to the sandy coastline in the east. The region produces a wide variety of wine, less known on the international circuit, but with 13 varieties of wine having the DOC label (Denominazione di Origine Controllata).

Most of the wines are produced by small aziendas and cantinas and are a pleasant surprise for the tourists when they first visit Le Marche.

The most common wines are:

  • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
  • Sangiovese
  • Trebbiano
  • Pinot Nero
  • Pinot Bianco
  • Ciliegiolo
  • Vernaccia Nera
  • Maceratino
  • Verdiccio
  • Malvasia (Tuscany)
The Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is worth trying; it is an elegant dry white wine that is excellent with seafood and fish. Also try Lacrima di Morro, a wonderfully rich red with a heady floral bouquet that goes well with spicy dishes and red meat, and also Rosso Conero, a ruby red with a scent of cherry and plum that goes well with red meat and cheeses.
