Lucca is both a province and a city with the population of the latter being just under 90,000.

The pleasure that Lucca exudes is not only artistic, but also the everyday of the old grocery and pastry shops situated in the via Fillungo offering the most exquisite local specialities, the wine taverns, the characteristic trattorias, and the restaurants that have a long tradition originating from the Lucchese love of the table.

Lucca is also the birthplace of the composers Francesco Geminiani, Gioseffo Guami, Luigi Boccherini, Giacomo Puccini and Alfredo Catalani.

The festive month is September which centres around a candlelit procession on the 13th of the month, when Volto Santo is carried through the streets from San Frediano to the Duomo. In September there are also classical concerts (Teatro Comunale in Piazza del Giglio) and, jazz and art exhibitions.
