Marche Geography

Le Marche (originally Le Marche de Ancona) is on the west coast of Italy and borders Emilia Romagna in the north, Tuscany in the north west, Umbria in the west, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, and the Adriatic sea to the east. Most of the hinterland of the region is covered in beautiful hills which give way to a narrow coastal strip with lovely sand beaches and turquoise blue waters. In the 19th century a railroad was built from Bologna in the north to Brindisi in the south and this is the main route through the region. Inland the roads are smaller and often winding over passes.

Le Marche has five provinces:

Most people live along the coastal strip and inland is sparsely populated except for the main mediaeval towns like Macerata and Urbino.

Le Marche boasts a wonderful landscape of rounded hills, crossed by eleven valleys, and sandwiched between 180 kilometers of 'Blue Mountains' of the Sibillini, with their striking rock formations, glacial moraines and Alpine flora, provide a stunning view. Inland is unspoilt and relatively untouched by tourism which makes it a great place for rest and relaxation. The rugged scenery and beautiful hill towns are a great place to explore. In contrast the sandy beaches and seaside towns are popular with Italian tourists and only just being discovered by people from other countries for holidays.
