In general Le Marche is a lovely mixture of mediaeval towns, rurual countryside and long sandy beaches facing the glistening Adriatic Sea. In the 4th Century BC exiles from Magna Gracea colonised much of this region with the most notable influence being in Ancona, the most northerly point of Greek penetration. St the time of the early Middle Ages Le Marche marked the edge of the Holy Roma Empire; 'marche' actually means border area. The peak for Le Marche was under Federico da Montefeltro in the 15th Century when Urbino became one of Europe's leading courts. Today one of the greatest attractions for visitors including Italians themselves, is for the coatsal stretches with sandy beaches and seaside towns.
