Alghero on the north coast of Sardinia was founded in teh 12th century. It was settled by people from Barcelona and Valencia is Spain. The original Ligurian and Sardinian people were forced out with such strength that the look and feel of the town today is very Spanish and the Catalan language and culture is thriving.
The old town is really interesting with a myriad of alleyways, old cobbled streets and a historic feeling that you get from these old ports. This old town of Alghero contains the sixteenth century Torre di Porta Terra which faces the Giardino Pubblico. It is a fascinating tower complemented by other towers around the outside of the town such as Torre dell'Espero Reial and Torre san Giacomo. There is also the sixteenth century Duomo which is characterised by a Catalan-Gothic style with an Aragonese portal.
Holiday makers can also stay in a Sardinia Villa in the surroundings of Alghero where there is plenty to do besides visit the beaches. The famous cave complex of Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune's Grotto) is located just 15 km to the west on the peninsular of Capo Caccia. These grottos are one of the most spectacular cave complexes in Italy and a very popular tour destination. To the north and south of Alghero the resorts of Bosa and Stintino can also be easily reached for a day trip. Stintino on the northwestern tip of Sardinia is renowned for its stunning coastline at La Pelosa with its superb beaches and calm turquoise waters.
