Cagliari is the historic capital of Sardinia and is located in the middle of the south coast of the island. It is situated by the Golfo degli Angeli (Gulf of Angels) and was named by the Spaniards because of its charm and beauty. This is a lovely location for renting a Sardinia Apartmnet in the old town or a Sardinia Villa by the sea along the coast to the west or to the east.
ItsCagliari's position results in an exceptionally mild climate which in turn gave rise to the development of an urban settlement as long ago as the 7th century BC. The development was enhanced by the Phoenicians and later by the Carthaginians.
From the highest points of the historic city centre it is possible for visitors to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Gulf of Cagliari. To the Eats you can see the rugged and rocky spur of the Sella del Diavolo (Devil’s saddle) and the lovely long (11 km) Cagliari beach known as Poetto, just 10 minutes walk from the city centre.
The old city was mainly constructed on the eight white rocky hills. This calcareous rock gave Cagliari its name. Cagliari is surrounded on three sides by water, either by sea or by a lagoon. The city’s monuments are mostly located in the fascinating historic quarters called Castello, Marina, Stampace and Villanova. Overseeing these areas are the white walls of the Castello whch has ben occupied by the ‘Giudici’ of Cagliari, the Pisans, Spaniards and Piedmontese.
Cagliari's port is situated only 17 km from the Gibraltar to Suez ideal transport line and represents one of the poles for transhipping activities in the Western Mediterranean. The territorial area managed by Cagliari's Port Authority extends for approximately 30 km of coastline.
We recommmend staying in a Sardinia Apartment in Cagliari for an interesting vibrant town-based holiday or alternatively renting a Sardinia Villa along the coast in one of the small resorts.
