Tortoli Area Information

Tortoĺ is located on the east coast of Sardinia, just above Costa Rei. It is also very slightly inland from Arbatax, the prot which has access to the sea for the whole of Ogliastra and is the only port in the province of Nuoro. It is a good area from which to explore the less developed areas on the east coast and enjoy the views of the sea and the various rocky coves and sandy beaches. There is also a small airport connecting the location to mainland Italy. To the north there is Girasole and Lotzorai, to the west Villagrande Strisaili and Ilbono, and to the south there is Barisardo.

The economy around Tortoli was traditionally based on agriculture and farming but has now evolved into industrial and service sectors and tourism. Fish products such as the renowned Bottarga (dried grey mullet eggs) are high on the list and there are also local wines like Cannonau.

You can also visit the tower of San Gemiliano set on the promontory overlooking the bay in location Porto Frailis and the Spanish tower of San Michele dating back to the Sixteenth century situated in the centre of Arbatax.

For more relaxation there are several beautiful white sandy beaches along the Tortoĺ coast; these include the very long and wide Orŕ beach, the famous Cea beach and the beaches of San Gemiliano and Sos Flores.
