Sardinia is not only the second largest island of the Mediterranean (after Sicily) but also an island of superlatives Comparisons, such as 'Sardinia is the Caribbean of Europe' may be attempted, but hardly show a complete picture of the island. However, D H Lawrence was definitely right when he said, in 1921, 'Sardinia is something else!'
The island has an area of 24,000 square kilometres and a population of 1.65 million. It is an autonomous region of Italy with the regional capital in Cagliari. The region is divided into four provinces: Cagliari, Sassari, Nuoro and Oristano. See also: Sardinian towns
For many holidaymakers, and for a part of the European jetset, Sardinia consists of the world famous Costa Smeralda in the northwest, with its dazzling white beaches. However, there are many other attractive coastal areas around the Sardinia for travel with Torre delle Stelle and Villasimius in the south east corner, near Cagliari, and Costa Rei on the southern part of the east coast.
Sardinia also has much more to offer people on holiday with the rugged mountainous terrain of the interior, old fishing villages, great restaurants and cuisine and colourful markets.
