A total of 1.65 million Sardinians inhabit the island with most living around the coast strips of land; the interior being sparsely inhabited. Perhaps strangely Sardinia also has 4 million sheep on the island; no wonder lamb is so popular in the dishes and Pecorino cheese is one of the islands largest exports!
Sardinia has its own native language so you will find both sardinian and Italian spoken on the island. Sardinian is a Romance language with obscure roots in Phoenician, Etruscan, and Near Eastern languages. Whilst Sardinian has been significantly replaced by Italian for official purposes, Sardinian is still widely spoken in rural areas.
In the northern regions of Gallura and Sassari, the language spoken is not Sardinian but a variety of Corsican). On the island of San Pietro, the dialect spoken is Ligurian, from Genoa. In the city of Alghero in the north, a Mediaeval dialect of Catalan is still spoken (the name of the city in Catalan is L'Alguer) as the island was an Aragonese colony in the past.
