Sardinia has dazzling white beaches, which even in high summer are not overcrowded. Some of the best beaches can be found not only at Villasimius on the Costa Rei or on the Costa Smeralda, but also in many other parts of the island.
Olbia
This is the arrival point for many holidaymakers, either at the ferry port or at the airport. The town itself is unspectacular with the harbour being a large building site! Two large shopping centres, one on the northern route out of town, in the direction of Costa Smeralda; the other on the SS125 to the south, directly opposite the entrance to the airport, cater for half the island. Here you can shop till you drop, if you wish.
Sassari
The second largest town on the island. An interesting old town with chaotic traffic and a chronic lack of parking spaces. The road out of the town to the south, the 'Carlo Felice,' is interesting with steep sandstone cliffs to the right and olive trees to the left. A few kilometres to the south, the church of the Santissima Trinita di Saccargia, directly beside the road, is worth a visit.
Alghero
This is on the west coast and has a strong Spanish influence. A beautiful old town with an atmospheric harbour. Unfortunately, it's very touristy. To the north, however, in the direction of Fertillia, things get better: Grotto di Nettuno, on the Capo Caccia, is one of the most beautiful grottoes on the island.
Cagliari
Cagliari is in all matters of importance the centre of the island, but mainly for the Sardinians themselves. The approach by road from the north is ugly, but arrival by sea or air is wonderful. The area around the port is, in fact, the culinary capital of the island, all at very reasonable prices.
