A bottle of Zedda Piras' finest

Sardinia Wine

Sardinia's most famous wine producer, and one of the largest in the whole of Italy, is Tenuta Sella & Mosca near Alghero. If you have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour, this will give you the opportunity to meet the firm Zedda Piras. This firm, owned by Sella & Mosca and situated on the estate produces a unique myrtle liqueur, which should be sampled ice-cold, and also the classic Sardinian grappa, 'Filu e Ferru (in English, iron wire), and 'Ramo d'Oro.'

Oristanese is the home of the famous 'Vernaccia Di Oristano.' This sherry-like fortified wine has nothing to do with the Vernaccia from Tuscany, but beware: invitations to tasting 'home-produced' Vernaccia from someone's own vineyard can lead to serious headaches

Typical Sardinian red wines are produced not only from the Cannonau grape but also from the Carignano. The best of these wines are made by the Cantina Sociale di Santadi, in the town of that name. A top quality wine with cult status is Terre Brune, a blend with Bovaleddeu, always expensive but at least still available in Sardinia.

Examples of pure Carignano wines are the excellent Rocca Rubia, the Baia Rosse and the Grotta Rossa. There are also wines which are produced in somewhat greater quantities, especially recommended are the red Costera and the white S'Elegas.

In all vineyards the best thing to do is, where possible, to taste the produce. You will find good value for money in the numerous enotece; however, the wines in the supermarkets and alimentari (food shops) are best left alone.
