Agrigento Area Information

The ancient city of Agrigento on the south west coast of Sicily originates from the ancient Akragas and was founded around 580 BC in this fertile area. The location is near the Acropolis and Rupe Atenea hills. Agrigento sits on a plateau overlooking the sea, with two nearby rivers called the Hypsas and the Akragas, and a ridge to the north of the city culminating in a natural fortification. The Greek colonists from Gela began the settlement which is why the area has a wealth of ancient Greek ruins attracting visitors today.

Ancient Akragas expanded rapidly and became one of the richest and most famous of the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia. The famous 'Valley of the Temples' is a glorious monument to this wonderful history. The town has been besieged by the Carthaginians, overtaken by the Romans who changed the name from Akragas to Agrigentum., conquered by the Arabs, ruled by the Normans and has therefore a rich and colourful influence that has resulted in a mix of cultires, styles, architecture and people today.

Today Agrigento is a town of about 56 thousand people and the city lies about 230 metres above sea level and 200 km from Catania airport. The area is known as 'Mandorlo in Fiore' or the land of the blossoming almond trees. It is a location where tourists find it relaxing to stay in a Siicly Villa in the countryside or by the coast, or in a Sicily Apartment in the town, to enjoy their holiday in Sicily. There are also vast citrus plantations and olive groves in the surrounding area.
