Cefalu is a combination of a lovely old Sicilian town with narrow streets and apartments, together with a new town and a beautiful long sandy beach. Towering over the old town is a massive rock shaped like a cake with very old fortifications which can be reached by a steep climb from the centre of the historic old town.
You can either rent a Sicily holiday apartment in one of the narrow streets in the old town or stay in a lvely Sicily villa in the hills overlooking the glorious coast, perhaps even with a swimming pool. Whatever your choice this is a facsinatinng Sicilian holiday in cefalu combining history with the shallow sandy beach which is greta for children and adults alike.
The old town is a myriad of typical Sicilian houses and apartments, some of which have a fabulous frontage right over the sea and stunning views of the sea, Some of the restaurants, which offer fresh fish, pasta and much more, have balconies right over the seas and even tables on piers which stretch over the rocks. Here you can have a wonderful evening meal or lunch washed down by some lovely Sicilian wine.
The centre of the town has a Duomo dating back to the 1100's as well as some ancient mozaics and a small museum with artefacts dating back to Greek and Byzantine times as well as Roman antiques. Nearby there are some lovely small towns and some fantastic Sicilian holiday villas available for rent. If you prfer to waly then rent an apartmnet in amongst the local Sicilian culture and life.
On the 4th, 5th and 6th of August every year there is the Cefalu town festival which includes a procession, and fireworks for St salvadore. Around the beginning of September there is a beer festival on the promenade but this is not worth writing home about. The best for Gelati lovers is the 5 day International Ice Cream fextival in Cefalu around the middle of september where there are perhaps 30 stalls from local Sicilian Gelati makers, a few mainland Italian Artisanal producers and a few overseas local producers. In 2009 this included Japan, Israel, Spain and Morocco ! For about 5 Euros you can get a ticket to try between 5 and 7 ice creams (small quantities). Better still are the fanatsic mouth watering flavours or the artisanal makers in the local Gelateria.
