Gioiosa Marea Area Information
Gioiosa Marea is a great seaside vacation destination and is located on the nort east coast of Sicily in the region of Messina. The town is a fishing resort on the Tyrrhenian coast between Capo d'Orlando and the Golfo di Patti, and is well known for its citrus fruits and olives. The town of Gioiosa Marea really evolved from the second half of the eighteenth century when people migrated here. The population is now around 7,000 people. After the earthquake of 1783, the fourth in the century, the reminder of the former inland town's population decided to reconstruct their new town on the coast. They established a fishing community that developed in recent years into a lovely tourist resort.

We recommend the Torre Vinciguerra, established as a fortress by founder Vinciguerra Aragona in 1366, the ruins of the Aragonese castle on Monte Meliuso, and the Grotto of Gioiosa Marea, consisting of three separate chambers connected through corridors and tunnels. The latter has a myriad of stalactites and stalagmites of great beauty.
