Marsala Area Information

Marsala is a historic port located on the very western tip of the island of Sicily. It is perhaps most famous for its its thick, strong and sweet wine known as Marsala. The history of the wine goes back as far as the seventeenth century where, in its early days, three British families controlled the production of Marsala wine. It is worth visiting the Museo Archeologico di Baglio Anselmi which is located in the original warehouses of the wine production.

Marsala and the area have a very interesting and varied history. For example, you can visit the ruins of Lilybaeum which was an outpost of the Phoenician empire and was founded in 397 BC. In contrast the Duomo started in the seventeenth century is a tribute tot he local patron saint, Thomas Becket of Canterbury. The Museo degli Arazzi has several wonderful sixteenth century Brussels tapestries.

Marsala is a great location to rent a Sicily Villa by the sea or in the countryside. You can also stay in a Sicily apartment in the town and explore the long history. There are other interesting towns to visit within a days trip such as Trapani to the north, the wonderful Selinunte and archeological excavations to the south east, and the islands off the coast to the west. Whatever your reasons, come and stay in a Sardinia apartment or a Sardinia villa in the area around Marsala.
