Ragusa Area Information

Ragusa is an old Baroque town in the south east of the island of Sicily. In many ways it has remained unchanged in centuries in its appearance cascading down a hillside. Certainly if you like to explore old towns and the surrounding countryside then this is one corner of Sicily worth staying and renting a Sicily Villa nearby or staying in a Sicily apartment in the town.

This old Sicilian town is often missed by tourists, which is a pity, as there is much to see and life is typically Sicilian. During the 1693 earthquake, Ragusa like many other towns, collapsed and anew town had to be built, called Ragusa Superiore, which was built on a high plateau above the original settlement. However, the traditional aristocracy didnt want to leave their old Palazzi and rebuilt Ragusa Ibla on the original site. The two towns were only merged in 1927.

Wheter you wish to holiday in a Sicily Villa in the naerby countryside or on the edge of town, or to rent a Sicily apartmnet in the old streets of the town itself, this place is certainly worth exploring. The Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista is the main monument of Ragusa Superiore but there are many other areas also worth exploring.
