Founded about the middle of the VII century BC, Selinunte became quickly a big and powerful city, flourishing in trade and in art. The city was later destroyed by Carthage in 408 B.C. Today, inside the unique atmosphere of this amazimg archaeological park, the remians of no less than eight temples are preserved. Some of the most important artifacts make up part of the most magnificent collection of the regional museum of Palermo.
Today the economy of Marinella di Selinunte is based around traditional fishing activity and many fisherman still keep alive this activity, selling the famous sardines of Selinunte also through popular festivals.
