Selinunte Area Information

Selinunte was one of the most important of the Greek colonies in Sicily and is now world renowned for its Valley of the Temples. This is arguably the largest open archaeological site for ancient Greek Temples. Selinunte is located on the south western coast of Sicily which is a great place to holiday in a Sicily Villa or to rent a Sicily Apartmnet for your vacation.

Selinunte is located between the valleys of the rivers Belice and Modione in the province of Trapani. The archaeological site contains five temples centered around an acropolis and is a fabulous site to behold. Of the five temples, only the Temple of Hera, also known as "Temple E", has been re-built. Selinunte was the most westerly of the Greek colonies in Sicily, and for this reason fairly early came into contact and battle with the Carthaginians and the native Sicilians in the west and northwest of the island.

Perhpas the most remarkable of these ancient ruins at Selinus are those of the three temples on the hill to the east. These do not appear to have been included in the city but were instead built as a kind of spectacle to front the ancient city. All of these temples are considerably larger than the others with the most northerly being one of the largest found anywhere; it had 8 columns in front and 17 down the sides totalling 11o metres in length and 55 metres in width. It is actually longer but not as wide as the great Temple of Olympian Zeus at Agrigentum.

For an historic and cultural holiday in Sicily which is also located close to some lovely beaches, we highly recommend a vacation near Selinunte where you can rent a Sicily Holiday Villa or stay in a Sicily apartment.
