Taormina is arguably the most famous town or city on the island of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. It represents the Authentic Sicily with a combination of drammatic sheer rock face cascading towards the sea, beautiful bays, sandy beaces and a rich history including its most famous landmark, the Amphitheatre. You would have to try hard to find a more suitable location to rent a Sicily Villa or Sicily Apartment for that real taste of Sicily.
The most historic site is, of course, the Amphithatre of Taormina which was started in the third century BC by the Greeks and rebuilt by the Romans later. There are lovely views of Mount Etna from the amphitheatre. The amphitheatre and old town can be reached by a funicular railway from the coast road and new town at the bottom of the cliff face. There are lovely views of Mount Etna in the distance from the amphitheatre.
Mount Etna can easily be reached in a day trip from Taormina and is well worth that special experience. Please choose a clear day to enjoy both the view of the mountain and the view from the top of the surrounding countryside and Taormina. Mount Etna is Europe's highest and most active Volcano at 3,370 metres. Much of the tourist station was destroyed in the recent activity and lava flows and a new staging point is being rebuilt. We woudl recommend renting a Sicily Villa in the surroundings of Taormina of a Sicily apartment in the town itself to enjoy this wonderful and authentic Sicily.
