Trapani Area Information

Trapani occupies a narrow peninsula on the very north west coast of Sicily. It was founded by the Elymians to serve as the port of the nearby city of Erice. It is a lovely location for visiting this area of Sicily including Erice and the island of Favignana. The nearest airport is Palermo and you can rent lovely Sicily villas by the sea or inland as well as Sicily apartmnets in the towns.

There are two ancient legends telling of mythical origins for the city. The first says that Trapani came from the sickle which fell from the hands of the goddess Demeter while she was searching for her daughter Persephone, who had been kidnapped by Hades. The second involves Saturn, god of the sky, who eviscerated his father Cronus with a sickle which fell into the sea thus creating the city.
