Sicily is a very large island and we can only give you a glimpse of some of the places to visit below.
Selinunt
This was established as the most western Greek colony during 628 BC. In 409 this blooming city was destroyed by the Carthaginians. The impressive ruins today still show the importance of the former city, especially the eight Dorician temples from the 6th and 5th century BC. Since 1925 restoration has started on these temples and they have partially been erected again. Selinunt is a 'must' for visitors who travel to Sicily.
Palermo
This is the capital of Sicily. Goethe has maintained that Palermo possesses the prettiest foothills in the world. The cape is something to be seen whatever happens. In Palermo you can view the cathedral with the graves, and the Norman palace (once the former royal castle) across from the luxurious palm tree gardens.
Castellammare
Castellamare was once the harbour city of Segesta, established in 827 BC and there is still rich evidence of this time. The coast here is particularly pretty, and little sandy bays interchange with bizarre rock formations. The National Park Zingaro is located here, in the gulf of Castellammare. This was the first nature protected zone of Sicily and the coast is totally untouched.
Ragusa
This picturesque town lies above a valley with a steep cliff. Numerous drilling towers point to the fact that oil is present. The city has several pretty baroque churches and the city garden gives lovely views.
Etna
Of course you cannot go on holiday to Sicily without visiting mount Etna. At the Southeast foot of Etna lies Catania, which has been almost totally reconstructed after the 1693 earthquake. Rising close to the sea is the castle Ursino Friedrichs the II, which today incorporates an art museum. The garden villa Bellini has ornate busts and lovely views.
From Catania, you can start with an excursion to Mt.Etna. A 34 km drive followed by the cable car. This 3,396m high giant dominates the island. It is the largest active volcano in Europe. Its base measures 40 km in diameter, and its circumference is 145km.
