Elba Apartments & Villas (Tuscany)

The island of Elba is only 5 1/2 miles from the mainland of Italy, and remains influenced by Tuscany. This is reflected in the relaxing settings and good local food and wine which people come back time again fto enjoy. The island has a natural beauty with pine scented forests and headlands formed by the wind with hidden coves sheltering sandy beaches. The clear blur waters are very inviting for swimming and snorkelling. Elba is an ideal location for holidaymakers seeking peace and relaxation and who wish to rent a Tuscan holiday apartment or villa.

Called Ilva by the Ligurians and Aethalia by the Greeks, the island then passed from the Etruscans and became part of the Roman Empire. During the Middle Ages it was ruled by the Pisans and served as a haven for the Barbary pirates in the 16th century. The Medici influence can be seen in the fortifications of Portoferraio. Of course historically, many people know that Elba was was greatly influenced by Napoleon Bonaparte, whose first exile from France was in 1814/15. Although he lived here for less than a year, he did much to improve the island by building new roads, modernizing agriculture, and developing iron mines. His summer home, the Villa di San Martino, is open to tourists for visits.
