Carrara is the world capital and it is located on the Tuscany coastline by the Ligurian Sea. The city is well known internationally for its white marble quarries. Many of the mountain villages of Carrara, in the past based their economy on agricultural wheeras others based theirs on marble extraction. Another famous feature of Carrara is the eleventh century Duomo di Carrara, thee pieve di Sant'Andrea Apostolo, around which the town of Carrara developed. It is built entirely from marble. The interior is very picturesque, with roof arches on columns with a variety of capitals, rich with marble and prestigious works. Also worth a visit is Carrara Malaspina Castle with the Academy of Fine Arts (eleventh century). This building became the seat of the Fine Art Academy in 1805.
