Pisa is undoubtably most famous for its Leaning Tower which dominates the skyline. For many years this Tuscany city has been depicted around the world in photos, post cards and films for the strange anomally. Until recently the famous tower was slowly subsiding such that it would eventually topple over or crumble. The good news is that clever foundation work during the late 1990's and early 2000's has stopped the subsidenece and the Leaning Tower of Pisa has now stopped moving. Well that's what the experts say ! Fortunatley they also decided not to straighten it up !
Pisa is a great place to rent a Tuscany Holiday apartemnt in the city to explore the many sites. Alternatively many tourists prefer to rent a Tuscany holiday villa in the surrounding countryside and visit Pisa on a dialy basis by car or travelling on public transport. The buildings of the city reflect the grand past and influence that this historic centre has had through the ages. The city is more spacious than other major Italian cities and it is more colourful than Florence due to the yellow, pink and ochre houses.
The Dumono is fabulous with its colonnaded facade, attention to detail and shear dominance of the Piazza in which it sits. The Leaning Tower of Pisa looks somewhat quirky alongside but is magnificent in its architecture with the successive circles of columns progressing up the height of the tower. The Duomo,or cathedral, was built from 1063 with two main architects, Buscetto who started the work, and Rainaldo who completed it towards teh middle of the 1100's. This is a vast building in the shape of a Latin Cross and it has a splendid pulpit created over ten years by Giovanni Pisano.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, Torre Pendente, is actually the Bell Tower of the cathedral and has long been the symbol of the city. The top of the tower is a massive 5 metres off the verticle, which is an incredible feat since the architect unknowingly created a future World attraction ! The leaning is due entirely to the placement on Alluvial Soil which is not compact enough to bear the weight of the building ! The Tower was begun by Bonnano Pisano in 1173 and he had reached teh first floor when the subsidence began. The architect chose to ignore the subsidence and built another two stories. The second subsidence caused work to stop for another century. The top of the Bell Tower was completed in 1350. So whetehr you choose to visit Pisa for the famous Leaning Tower or Duomo, or just wish to take a break on the Tuscan coast, then we have many Tuscany Villas and Apartmnets for your holiday in this area.
