San Gimignano Area Information

San Gimignano is on of the more famous Medieval Tuscan towns due to its stunning Noble Towers which dominate the skyline in northern Tuscany. The town itself is based on top of a hill in the Val d'Elsa and is surrounded by the uniquely rolling countryside for which Tuscany is so well known. However there was the intense rivalry between the Guelf and Ghibelline factions represented by the Ardinghelli and Salvucci families that left its mark on the town.

The entrance to Via del Castello is the location of the fourteenth century Palazzo Tortoli and opposite is the Torre del Diavolo. The north west side of Piazza Cisterna is dominated by teh two Ardinghelli Towers.
