San Miniato Apartments & Villas (Tuscany)
The drive from Monsummano in Tuscany along the SS 436 leads through the marshy areas of Fucecchio, with its unusual flora and fauna, to the Arno Valley, where the town of San Miniato extends along a mountain ridge on the south side. Because of its strategic location high above the valleys of the Arno, the Elsa and the Egola, the town was of military significance even during the Roman era. During the reign of the German emperor Otto I it became the seat of the imperial palatinate in Tuscany.
Today, San Miniato is a quiet little town to use as your base for a holiday in Tuscany, that only becomes lively in autumn, when it hosts a popular truffle festival (the third Saturday in October). And in November, a market for white truffles is held here every weekend. This is certainly an interesting and central location to rent a Tuscany holiday villa or Tuscany apartment for that lovely holiday in Italy.
One noteworthy sight is the tower, the last remnant of a castle that Frederick II had built high above San Miniato. Below this, on the tree-shaded Prato del Duomo, is the 13th-century Cathedral with its proud campanile.
Between San Miniato and Empoli, on the highway leading from Livorno to Florence, a small road turns off to the left, which takes you across the Montalbano ridge to Pistoia. This winding, yet extremely lovely scenic road passes through dense olive groves on its way to Vinci, birthplace of none other than Leonardo. There's a museum devoted to him in the old castle, while the house where he is supposed to have been born is actually a bit outside of town near Achiano, almost hidden behind olive trees and cypresses. Here, too, you can see exhibits and reproductions of some of his works.
