There are very few towns that can claim they existed before the Romans, that continued to expand during Roman times, and evolved further during the Middle Ages,; Volterra is such a town. Today it stands proud on a hill with a very imposing and strong appearance, surrounded by immense walls and fortifications. Indeed there is a very long and tough climb up the many steps to reahc teh centre of the historic town.
The gignatic Etruscan walls bring a sense of calm to the interior streets and alleyways which lead to some piazza's, an legant Roman theatre, the Etruscan museum and the attractive ancient Medieval quarter. Here you can rent a Tuscany apartment for your holidays and enjoy the old atmosphere and living in times gone past but with modern amenities ! Alternatively you can rent a lovely Tuscany Villa in the countryside surrounding Volterra and enjoy peace and relaxation whilst sipping a glass of wine and viewing the town in the dusk.
In Volterra it is worth visiting the Duomo and Battistero. The cathedral is in teh picturesque Piazza S Giovanni and was built in the Pisan Romanesque style. The via dei Sarti is also interesting to amble along as it is lined with old mansions and or particular note are the Art Gallery, Palazzo Minucci-Solaini, and Palazzo Viti. The latter is the home to the Viti family who owned the famous Volterra stone, marble and alabaster factory.
The Museo Etrusco Guarnacci is also based in Volterra and this houses the former archaeological collection of Monsignor Mario Guarnacci. The museum displays an extensive collection of Etruscan artefacts dating from the 8th century Bc (Villanovan period) to the first century Bc (Hellenistic period).
