Perched on top of a tufaceous rock plateau, the city of Orvieto rises out of the valley below like an island from the sea. Millions of years ago a sea did in fact cover the area, now wooded, where the river Paglia runs. Visitors can reach the old town centre either by leaving their car below and taking the funicular lift up or by using the ingenious system of lifts and escalators that have been dug out of the rock at Campo della Fiera.
The Duomo of Orvieto is one of the most important examples of Gothic architecture in Italy. Gothic style architecture in Italy developed substantial differences from its European equivalent, chiefly due to the different cultural heritage of the Italian peninsula and the particular historical moment, characterised by comuni and free city states, in which this form of architecture gained a foothold here. At the heart of the Medieval quarter of Orvieto there is a fascinating underground labyrinth of passages, with caves and archaeological finds, all brought to light relatively recently after centuries of neglect. The most important structure in this network is certainly the Pozzo della Cava.
