Umbria, the green heart of Italy, lies in the centre of the Italian peninsula, amid the green hills of the Apennines. The total area amounts to only 8,456 square kilometers and it is bordered by Tuscany, Marche and Lazio. The landscapes of the province are varied with the extensive valley of the Tiber, the fertile valleys of the Chiascio and Topino, and the Nera Valley, rich in unspoiled nature.
Umbria does not have a sea coastline, however there is plenty here for lovers of water to do with the great lakes of Trasimeno and Piediluco and the impressive waterfall Cascata delle Marmore, near Terni; these are very worthwhile visits for people taking holidays in Umbria. Umbria has numerous thermal and mineral springs and the regional cuisine is rich in local delicacies, prepared in traditional fashion.
Umbria is mostly hilly and mountainous with the Appenines dominating to the east; the highest point being Monte Vettore at 2,476 metres on the border with Marche. The river Tiber forms approximately the border with Lazio.
