The most famous Umbrian wine is Orvieto which comes from the town and area of the same name. This is a good quality white wine for the table. There are many other good wines from this region including Torgiano, Montefalco, Colli Amerini, Colli Trasimeni, Colli Martani, Colli Perugini, Colli Alto Tiberini and Assisi.
The beautiful rolling hills of the Umbrian landscape and the mild climate with plenty of sunshine make the cultivation of vineyards easier than in other parts of Italy. Clay ground and rich spring waters have been the base of high quality wines since the time of antiquity.
Some of the DOCG and DOC wines are:
Orvieto: An excellent dry-sweet white wine. Produced since Etruscan times in tufa caves.
Torgiano: A more recent wine production area, specialised in rose, red wines and spumante.
Montefalco: Produced during Roman Times under the name of "Itriola". Later it was replaced by 'Sagrantino' a world famous wine. A dry red and a raisin wine are also produced in this area.
Assisi: A good area for the production of red, white and rose wines. The most famous are 'Grechetto' and 'Novello'.
Trasimeno: Lake Trasimeno is a special area of Umbria with good red and white wines.
