Venice History
Venice became an independent Byzantine empire in the 10th century. Exclusive trading links were forged with the East and victory in the Crusade of 1204 brought wealth and power.
During the Middle Ages under the leadership of successive doges Venice was able to expand its power base throughout the Mediterranean to Constantinople (Istanbul today). The immense wealth accumulated is seen in the art and architecture throughout the city today. Looking aroung St Marks’ square is a testament to the power base of the 12th to 14th centuries.
Over time, as other states in Europe rose to prominence, Venice’s power on the world scene declined. In 1797 Venice fell to Napoleon and later in 1866 the city joined the State of Italy.
