Venice Places to Visit

Venice is one of the few cities in the world that can be accurately described as truly unique. The city was built historically on a series or low mud banks amid the tidal waters of the Adriatic sea. The construction is on stilts and still amazingly survives today.

Today Venice has a role in the capacity of tourism with its Palazzi becoming museums, shops, hotels and apartments and the convents have become home for art restoration. Still the fabric of Venice has remained unchanged for around 200 years.

The best way to see Venice is from a trip in a water bus (Vaporetto) along the Grand Canal which winds through the city. Here the palaces line the edge of the canal and present a stunning picture having being built over a span of five centuries. You can also take s short ride in the famous Gondolas of Venice in this or one of the many canals throughout the city; beware though, they are expensive and very tourist driven!

The vast gothic church of Santo Maria Gloriosa dei Frari dwarfs the eastern area of San Polo and is certainly worth a visit. The first church on the site was built by Franciscan friars in 1250 – 1338 but was replaced by a larger building in the 15th century. The airy interior is very striking owing to its size and quality of works of art.

You cannot visit Venice without seeing Piazza San Marco (St Mark’s square) which has witnessed pageants, processions, political activities and countless Carnival festivities throughout its long history. The two most important sites in the city are located here: the Basilica di San Larco and Palazzo Ducale. These truly are magnificent buildings. Palazzo Ducale was once home to Venice’s rulers and to the offices of State. The Basilica blends eastern and western design styles to create one of the most wonderful historic buildings in Europe.
